One of the most enjoyable and relaxing events in any bowls club’s calendar is the friendly match. At Retford Bowling Green they have fixtures with other clubs and associations in the Nottinghamshire area, and also those from further afield in Leicester, Bridlington and Sunderland. In fact two of the highlights of their calendar are the annual weekend trip to Sunderland and the day trip to Bridlington.
Last year they saw the introduction of a ladies’ section friendly against Mansfield Bowling Club ladies. This fixture is on the calendar again for this year, together with a new one against Welbeck Abbey ladies. These fixtures comprise two matches — home and away legs — the result being the aggregate score.
Wednesday 29th May saw the inaugural match of the Welbeck Abbey ladies friendly with Retford playing at home. Unfortunately, due to illness, Welbeck’s captain Janet Betts could only muster a team of eight ladies for a 3×3 match. So, as can happen with friendlies, Retford’s captain Glennis Evans fielded one of her ladies to play for the visitors. The result was a good win for Retford: 56 shots to 29. Welbeck ladies will have a chance to reverse this in the return leg at Welbeck on 5th August.
