Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture, takes place from Friday 11th to Sunday 20th September, and Inspire Libraries will be hosting a range of free heritage events in Retford and Worksop.
Retford Library
Retford Library will once again take part in Retford’s annual Heritage Day on Saturday 12th September. The library will be open as usual, with historical items from its Local Studies Collection on display in the heritage area between 10.00am and 3.00pm. Visitors can also enjoy an exhibition of historic photographs in the gallery, A Walk Through Retford’s Trading Past. No booking is required for either display. A free talk, Exploring Old Occupations, will take place from 1.30pm to 2.30pm in the library’s meeting room. One of Inspire’s Local Heritage Librarians will explore occupation records from the Retford area, including trade directories, local newspapers, census returns and other historical sources.

Worksop Library
On Wednesday 16th September, Worksop Library will host a free heritage talk, ‘The Liquorice Gardens of Worksop’, from 2.00pm to 3.00pm. Steve Williams, from Oasis Community Centre, will share the findings of the centre’s recent local history project, exploring the importance of liquorice growing to Worksop and the surrounding Bassetlaw area.

Coming soon – Fun Palace
Worksop Library’s popular Fun Palace returns on Saturday 3rd October from 10.00am to 3.00pm. Visitors of all ages are invited to enjoy a day packed with free activities celebrating art, science, health and heritage. Every area of the library will be transformed with hands-on activities, offering plenty to explore throughout the day. Entry is free and no booking is required.
