Fancy a cup and chatter? You do? Then look no further than Retford Men’s Probus Club. Retford Men’s Probus Club has been running since 1971. Their meetings take place at the Westhill Community Centre, Ordsall at 10.00am every other Friday. If you would like to go along to one of their meetings, please see www.retfordmensprobusclub.org.uk or contact the club by email to probyte@retfordmensprobusclub.org.uk or telephone the secretary on 07542 852037. You won’t regret it!

There was a bigger turn out than usual for the first meeting of the New Year, with over 40 members present. After the aforesaid cup and chatter session, when members greeted each other with belated seasonal wishes and New Year greetings, most of the group were eager to get to the coffee pot and do it justice. A sense of warmth and friendship was felt all around the venue. As the meeting was called to order, President Andrew Jefferson and Club Secretary Rob Boeuf welcomed the gathering officially, reiterating seasons’ greetings to all for 2020 and any relevant notices were given out.

Various members were thanked for their input over the 2019 sessions, eg for organising functions during the Christmas period, which once again proved to be a great success and now seems to be regular part of the club’s annual programme, designed to suit most tastes as members are from a variety of backgrounds and hold a wealth of knowledge between them. The engaged speaker on this occasion was Christine Shaw, who addressed the membership on the subject of ‘Fifty Years of James Bond’. The talk including a film presentation, was well received by those present, and their memories of Bond films was second to none. In fact, secretly some of them wishing they were the man himself (dream on) — shaken, not stirred! A question and answer session followed, members often asking and others from the floor answering the questions which were confirmed by the speaker. The talk covered the writers, producer, gadgets, ideas, stars who played the part over many years, some now household names, some not so successful, but admired by the ladies in general who often put them on the same pedestal of their handsome husbands we’re led to believe?

Another great start to decade for the club and it would appear set to continue with two more speakers arranged for the members’ entertainment. On 24th January Ian Morgan addressed the group on the subject ‘Footpads Kings and Highwaymen’. There is a complete change of subject for the February meeting, when the subject of ‘Container Plants and Vegetables’ will come under discussion. Members hope to see you there!
