Retford Men’s Probus Club has been running since 1971 and after this month’s AGM will be entering its 49th year. Their meetings take place at the Westhill Community Centre, Ordsall at 10.00am every other Friday. If you would like to go along to one of their meetings, please see www.retfordmensprobusclub.org.uk.
For those new to the idea of Probus, the name is an acronym for Professional and Business.
By the time this article is published, the club may have had their talk given by Colin Popplewell about the new Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers. In short order, they are having an additional meeting on 10th May, when Vince Eager will be giving his entertaining talk on his time in the 1950s and 60s as a member of the Larry Parnes stable of pop singers. He also spent a number of years working as a cruise director for American ships in the Caribbean.
The club had a great trip to Grimsby Fish Museum, and keeping to the pop theme, a couple of lines paraphrased form the Madness song ‘Baggy Trousers’ — “Oh what fun we had, having fun and being cool, standing on the quay and waiting for the lunchtime bell. Having fish and chips at the end of Cleethorpes Pier and sitting on the bus and thinking oh what fun we had.”
The AGM means the club’s Vice President Andrew Jefferson becomes the President and thanks should go to Geoff Gadie, who has had a great year as this year’s president. Thanks also go to Dennis, Guy and Mick Bradford for all their work to make the group work so well.
The club do have a fully planned programme for next year’s meetings so please have a look at their website under ‘Programme’ to see when these meetings will take place.
