Retford Men’s Probus Club

by | 21 December 2020 | Probus, Social Group

Retford Men’s Probus Club has been running since 1971. Their meetings take place at the Westhill Community Centre, Ordsall at 10.00am every other Friday. If you would like to join them please see www.retfordmensprobusclub.org.uk.
For those new to the idea of Probus, the name is an acronym for Professional Businessmen (and of course we must not forget the women).

November was a good month, with interesting speakers, but during this coming month members are having a closer look at their President Geoff Gadie. A born and bred Lincolnshire man, Geoff went to Barton Grammar school near the Humber. His father was a ship builder working in the local yard on wooden hulled vessels.

After completing his education, Geoff spent 15 years working for a motor factor in Lincoln, learning about and selling automotive components. He was then, in the mid-1970s, asked to join British Leyland’s commercial division and he saw the demise of the British commercial vehicle industry with names like Scammells, Foden, Albion and Leylands themselves disappear. In the mid-1980s the Scandinavian companies were taking a foothold, and Geoff joined Volvo’s commercial vehicle division.

His experience of over 25 years in the industry stood Geoff in good stead, and with his contacts and knowledge he was able to enhance the Volvo Group standing in the UK.

Married with now grown up children, Geoff is a Governor of Retford Oaks Academy and has worked for other local charities. He loves the island of Crete and has a superb knowledge of the island’s history, including an unrivalled knowledge of the military history of the island, during the Second World War.

For all his life, Geoff has been a supporter of Scunthorpe United Football Club. Often standing as a youth at the old Showground, he now enjoys sitting at Glanford Park to watch his team. Geoff is a popular president, and has grown into that position.

Retford Men’s Probus Club meet every other Friday morning at Westhill Community Centre, Ordsall at 10.00am. If you are interested in joining them, please email their secretary Dennis Beevers at dennis@denboy.plus.com and he will give you more details.
