Ladies, have you ever wondered what the WI really does? Is it all “Jam and Jerusalem”? Nowadays, certainly not! For a start, members are extremely interested in the topical issues of the moment and are not averse to placing their opinions in the appropriate domain. Who can fail to remember the Tony Blair episode at the WI’s national conference a few years ago? Every year, nationally the WI campaigns on a wide range of issues that matter to members.
Groups also try to initiate and maintain a community spirit. For example, last Friday North and South Wheatley WI hosted an afternoon tea for over 60 local senior citizens in the village hall, followed by musical entertainment from Village Harmony.
Local history is another interest. The group’s members have visited several local historic houses and their May meeting was all about the Pilgrim Fathers and the forthcoming 400 years anniversary celebrations which will attract visitors from all over the world, particularly the USA. In June, they will enjoy a boat trip down the recently restored part of the Chesterfield Canal finishing with a cream tea.
If you are interested in learning a little more about what North and South Wheatley WI group has to offer, then Tuesday 26th June will provide you with that opportunity as they are holding a free taster evening from 7.00pm to 9.00pm in Wheatley Village Hall. Members, along with local businesses who support the group, will demonstrate and display their various skills. Refreshments will be provided, and full information for our forthcoming meetings will be available. See you there!
