Wheatley Bowls Club will be opening the green on Saturday 18th April at 1.45pm. The club is a friendly and welcoming group and is keen to recruit new members, both experienced players and beginners.
The lawn bowls green is situated in a pleasant location next to the Village Hall in South Wheatley, with parking available just outside. There is also a small clubhouse for refreshments and storage of equipment. The driveway is opposite the Post Office.
Social play takes place on Saturday afternoons in what the club calls a ‘roll up’, where teams are picked at random and then re-picked after six ends and again after refreshments. This makes it a great way for new players to meet club members. Equipment and tuition can be provided for beginners.
From May to September the club also plays competitively in several leagues: the Gainsborough League on Monday and Wednesday evenings, the Isle of Axholme Senior League on Tuesday afternoons, and the Ordsall League on Thursday afternoons. Experienced players can enjoy regular match play, although the club places just as much importance on community and participation.
Bowls offers many health benefits. It is a gentle form of exercise that is easy on the joints and suitable for many people, including older adults. The game involves walking and bending, helping to improve fitness, balance and coordination, while the strategic nature of the sport keeps the mind active. Playing outdoors also provides fresh air and sunlight, which can help boost wellbeing.
Anyone interested in taking up a new sport or joining the club is encouraged to get in touch. Equipment can be provided, and all that is required is a pair of flat shoes with little tread. The first few sessions are free, after which the first year’s membership is just £25.00.
