Retford U3A members are looking forward to a great programme of speakers at their regular monthly meetings over the next few months. In March Phillip Cooper is giving a talk entitled ‘Travel and Holiday’. The timing seems just right as people are now looking at brochures for the summer and autumn. The group’s regular monthly General Meetings are always worth attending, as it gives members a chance to catch up with each other, and to find out the latest information on the 40 or so ‘interest groups’ available. These meetings take place on the fourth Thursday of the month, at the Well Baptist Church in Retford.
The Gardening Group have several trips planned for this spring and summer. In June they are visiting Sledmere House, near Driffield, and in July Wollerton Old Hall Gardens at Market Drayton. Go upstairs at the next meeting at the Well and get details from their interest group table. In the past if a trip has proved popular, they have had more than one bus so don’t be afraid of taking someone else’s place.
National U3A Day will take place on 3rd June. The Quilting Group and other craft groups are combining to produce ‘Bags for Life’, which will be given away on a stall in the Market Square (hopefully). More information on this and the ‘Pimms and Strawberry Tea’ will be in next month’s report.
If you have just moved into the area, or recently retired, have a look at the Retford U3A website. On there with a bit of button pushing, you should be able to find information on the interest groups available, and a contact you will probably need to speak to. At a recent meeting, the decision was made by the committee to open their interest groups to non-members, so that they can go to a meeting as a guest. If you have a friend who you know is a member of the U3A ask them what it’s all about.
Please remember the U3A is a national organisation with over 1,000 branches in the UK. The ethos of the U3A, is very simple. Members try to keep themselves active in body and mind, learning from each other, with shared knowledge and experiences. If you want to know more about the Retford U3A, have a look at the comprehensive web site, or contact the Membership Secretary, Paul Bacon at membership@retford-u3a.org.uk or 01427 880502 for more details.
