It was with real relief that Retford and District u3a held their first face-to-face General Meeting in more than one-and-a-half years last month. Even though there was no guest speaker, about 50 intrepid members attended at the Well, meeting friends again after what has seemed like an eternal wait! Feedback was very positive, and everyone felt comfortable with the arrangements made to keep them safe, so they have scheduled the next two meetings with guest speakers and relaunched their full range of interest group meetings. Capacity will rise to 100.
Retford u3a, in line with official advice, would respectfully request that you are mindful of keeping each other safer by getting vaccinated and / or getting tested before attending meetings. Their October General Meeting was at The Well from 1.30pm to 3.00pm with guest speaker, past chairman and general good guy, Adrian Sumner on ‘Hot Air and Gas Ballooning’.
For your diary, the next two General Meetings are on 25th November, welcoming Derek Turner to talk about The Retford Civic Society; and on 16th December (provisionally the Christmas Quiz if they can get it organised).
If you still are unsure about attending meetings in person, or just enjoy using Zoom, past chairman Roy Evans has got the Military History Group up and flying on Zoom with meetings twice a month! You don’t need a deep interest in military history to find the talks absolutely fascinating.
A final point! New opportunities exist for members to join the committee. Retford u3a is entirely run by the members. If you want to become more involved, meet more new friends in Retford and mix with a very friendly and supportive set of people, why not consider joining them? They need new people to maintain their high quality u3a going strong. Introduce yourself to any of them at the next General Meeting to find out more or phone the number below.
Please book your General Meeting place with the Membership Secretary, Sue Paul, no later than 9.30am on the day of the meeting. If you have not booked and just turn up there may not be a spare seat available for you. Email memsec@retford-u3a.org.uk or call 01777 705008.
