The Wednesday Group is a social group for people living with dementia, their carers, and former carers. It has become a much-valued source of companionship and support, with many members saying that it has changed their lives.
However, one challenge faced by popular groups like this is the risk of becoming oversubscribed – or, worse still, having to turn away people who are desperate for help and support. The group currently has a short waiting list, which, while hopeful, means they cannot always guarantee immediate availability. The organisers continue to explore ways to accommodate more people, though the real long-term solution lies in improved government provision of comprehensive dementia support through the NHS and social services.
In the meantime, the group hopes to help by sharing information about other independent support groups in the area. Many of these smaller, community-led initiatives are lifelines for carers, and pooling knowledge could make it easier for people to find the support they need. Anyone who runs or knows of such a group is encouraged to get in touch so that details can be shared more widely (with the consent of those involved).
For those caring for someone with dementia, living with a diagnosis, or simply wanting to know more, the Wednesday Group may be able to help. Sessions cost £10.00, which includes lunch, and the first visit is free.
