We CAAN is a charity-based initiative that provides a safe, inclusive space for children and adults with additional needs to be themselves. The group is currently supported by the generosity of St Giles School in Retford, which provides the use of its facilities. October half term was a busy and joyful time, as families old and new joined We CAAN at St Giles School for their stay-andplay
sessions. The new outdoor space proved a big hit, with plenty of budding pirates steering the
ship and searching for treasure – thankfully with no shipwrecks, though one or two sharks were
spotted through the telescope!
Now December is here again, and that means one of the most special events in the We CAAN calendar – the inclusive, sensory-friendly, and fully accessible Santa’s Grotto! The Grotto includes a wheelchairaccessible sleigh, ensuring that every child can visit Santa comfortably with their family. No one should have to worry about being judged, waiting too long, or feeling overwhelmed
– this is a space for everyone to enjoy, exactly as they are. This year marks We CAAN’s third Christmas Grotto, and it promises to be the best yet. After last year’s storm damage, the team has worked hard to repair, refresh and enhance the experience with new features and festive touches.
The Grotto will be open to the public on Sunday 14th December, from 10.00am to 5.00pm (please
note there may be waiting times). It’s located at St Giles (North), Retford Education Centre, Old
Hall Drive, Retford DN22 7EA. Entry is £10.00 for the first child or adult with additional needs (includes a small gift). £5.00 for additional children (includes a small gift). Parents and carers are
free – but don’t forget your camera!
The We CAAN team looks forward to welcoming both familiar faces and new families to share the
magic of Christmas together.
