We CAAN is a charity-based initiative that provides a space for children and adults with additional needs to be themselves. Sessions are currently hosted through the generosity of St Giles School in Retford. In July and August, five wonderful days of fun and excitement were enjoyed by We CAAN families at St Giles School. It was a pleasure to welcome new families and see familiar faces. This time, a calmer space was created for those who needed less stimulation, or for siblings who fancied something different from the sensory activities. Lego proved a popular choice, alongside craft events such as biscuit decorating, squeegee painting and masking tape art. It was a joy to see everyone getting involved and producing their own creations.
The weather was mostly kind, which meant the sensory quad could be used. Thanks to a playground rebuild at the school, families were also able to enjoy the larger outdoor space, featuring a wheelchair-friendly roundabout, a basket swing and a trampette. At the time of going to press, it is one week until the BBC Make a Difference Awards. The charity would like to thank again their anonymous nominator – it is truly humbling to know that the hard work and effort put into providing these sessions is recognised.
