The villages of Ranskill and Torworth are once again preparing for the annual invasion of scarecrows. The annual Ranskill and Torworth Village and Scarecrow Festival takes place over the weekend of 9th and 10th June, with around 100 scarecrows expected to be on display around the two villages and a full programme of events planned — in Ranskill on the Saturday and in Torworth on the Sunday. The scarecrows, however, will be on display in both villages all weekend.
Entries in the scarecrow competition have topped the 100-mark for several years now. And, everyone can join in the fun even if you don’t live in the villages. Anyone can make a scarecrow and festival organisers will arrange for it to be displayed in the villages.
But as well as the scarecrows, there is a full weekend programme of events taking place on Ranskill Village Park between 11.00am and 4.00pm on Saturday 9th June and between 11.00am and 4.00pm on Torworth Village Park on Sunday 10th June, with free admission on both days.
At Ranskill on the Saturday, organisers have arranged a free bouncy castle, children’s face painting and activities. Other attractions include Ranskill School Choir, a pop-up bar, live music, a barbecue and tea tent, ice cream, Worksop Amateur Radio, tombola, craft stalls, fancy dress competition, family sports, zumba dancing, Mansfield Astronomy Society, pony rides, owls, nail artist, go karts, flower and plant stall and village organisation stalls.
Torworth on the Sunday is famous for its strawberry cream teas and fun dog show. This year the event looks to be bigger and better than ever. Entry is free and there are free activities for the children including a bouncy castle, circus balance workshop, face painting and sports. There will be pony rides, a chance to learn bushcraft, have your photo taken with an owl and see nature safari. Enter your dog into the fun dog show or get free dog behavioural advice. There will be displays by the Bawtry Youth Theatre Group, Retford Gymnastics Display Team, a beekeeper and the Salvation Army Band. Why not have a go at line dancing? Friends of Daneshill Lakes will be there together with a wide range of stalls making a great day out for the whole family.
There is a grand raffle on both days and on the Sunday only you can ride on a ‘Red London Bus’ to see the scarecrows.
