Twinning visits resume at last!

Bassetlaw Twinning Association (BTA) is delighted to be welcoming a group from their partner organisation in Aurillac / Arpajon, in the Auvergne, this summer.

Recent years have seen a long gap in live twinning contacts with the district’s twin towns, caused by the pandemic and the ensuing disruption to foreign travel. But now a group of French visitors are booked to arrive on 27th July for six days and will be hosted by BTA members in their homes.

Following a visit from Bassetlaw to France in 2018, a group was due to come here in 2020, but we all know what happened then. Contact was maintained by email and on Zoom, and two intrepid BTA cyclists made it to Aurillac last summer on their bikes and caught up with old friends.

This year’s group is quite small – 10 people, several of whom are English teachers – and includes three teenagers. The children who came to Bassetlaw in 2017 have grown up, with some now at university. But the links between the two groups remain strong and the visit is eagerly awaited.

The programme includes the obligatory visit to Sherwood Forest and takes in other local attractions as well as going further afield to the Peak District and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. There will also be a Petanque (French Boule) session at the Arena in Worksop, at the invitation of the club who meet there.

All BTA members will be given opportunities to meet the visitors, at an informal garden gathering and a pub meal.

BTA welcomes enquiries from prospective new members. Anyone interested in finding out more about BTA, its twin towns and its activities should contact the BTA secretary by email on
