The Wednesday Memory Group

by | 19 June 2025 | Retford, Support Group

To the delight of Wednesday Group members, Retford Library has launched its summer programme of cultural activities, with the first event attended being the immensely popular Songs and Scones. Booking is essential to guarantee a place, but for just £3.00, attendees enjoy 45 minutes of live music from professional musicians, followed by a cup of tea or coffee, a freshly baked scone with cream and jam, and half an hour to socialise and make new friends.

Anywhere else, £3.00 might only cover a cup of tea – never mind the scone, music, and companionship! These events are a genuine delight. The musicians are trained to engage with audiences, making it easy for everyone to participate in the music-making. The impact is remarkable – members arrive smiling with anticipation and leave laughing, uplifted and energised by the shared musical experience and social interaction.

And it’s not just music on offer. There are also creative art sessions and Mind and Movement gentle exercise classes, all at very low cost or sometimes even free. Visitors are encouraged to drop into the library and book their sessions. The library staff are welcoming and inclusive – they don’t mind if you’ve never read a book in your life. They simply want people to enjoy what’s available. Wednesday Group members will be there – and so will the organiser, who hopes others will join too.

If someone is living with dementia, either as a carer or with a diagnosis, and thinks the Wednesday Group might be helpful, they are encouraged to get in touch. Contact Jan on 01777 709974 or 07969 180067 or email janwilliamson133@gmail.com for up-to-date information and current availability. There is currently a short waiting list, but it’s worth reaching out – you never know when a space may become available.

Each session costs £10.00 and includes lunch. The first visit is free!
