Celebrating is an important part of our lives. We celebrate personal things like birthdays, national things like the coronation, and things that seem almost universal like Easter and Christmas.
At The Wednesday Memory Group, they always try to celebrate members’ birthdays with a cake, a card and some candles. They had planned to celebrate Easter too, and then the coronation was announced so this year they will be working extra hard to make sure they do these important events justice – and have a jolly good time while they’re about it!
But celebrations are more than just having a good time, important though that is. They are about coming together and acknowledging and appreciating a person, a tradition or an institution. Celebrations are also about creating new memories of happy events. They can help us relive past happiness too.
For those with memory problems – and everyone else too – the symbols of the celebration (Easter eggs, Christmas trees) can powerfully stimulate feelings and memories. They help to keep people in the present day too because of their links to the seasons and to other important people in their lives.
The Wednesday Group is a mixed group of carers, former carers and people with dementia. If you care for someone with dementia or you yourself have a diagnosis and you think the Wednesday Group might be helpful, do get in touch.
