The last few months of 2021 proved to be a busy time for the Retford and District branch of The Royal British Legion. Having celebrated the branch centenary with an event in August, September saw the celebration of 100 years since the Market Square War Memorial was unveiled. Continuing in the theme of celebration the branch decided that, as a lasting tribute to the work done by the branch over the years, three trees should be planted across the district. The first two, both flowering cherries, were planted in Kings Park in Retford and in Harworth. The third, an apple tree, is to be planted in December in Bassetlaw Museum’s garden.
The branch has also been awarded a hundred-year pennant which can now be displayed on the standard. These have only been awarded to those branches that have been active continuously over a 100-year period.
Although the Poppy Appeal did not get back to normal, there were some areas that they were able to reintroduce – such as the stalls in Morrisons and Home Bargains. Thanks go again to the people of Retford and surrounding areas for their generosity. The total is not yet available but whatever has been collected will go towards the welfare of those in need.
There was also overwhelming support for the Armistice and Remembrance services held on Retford Market Square. The Armistice event was difficult as if fell on a market day, but the silence at 11.00am was complete. A special thank you goes to the stall holders who, without exception, supported the event. Both services were taken by the Rev Dick Lewis who ably stood in for their Padre Felicity Ferriter, who is recovering from an operation.
The relevance of the work of The Royal British Legion remains the same today as it did when it was set up in 1921. For further information please visit www.britishlegion.org.uk or if you require help or advice call 0808 802 8080.
