Did you know that you don’t need to spend anything on apps to make your laptop or PC a ‘working environment’. This applies whether that’s for home use or small business.
The open-source world – applications or other products – has more computer products in it than those from Microsoft and Apple combined. For computer users, normal commercial copyright agreements that forbid copying with severe punishments if infringed are replaced by ‘copyleft’ statements encouraging copying and sharing!
Would you like to get to grips with the likes of Libre Office, which is completely compatible with Microsoft’s Office 365 (it can both read and edit the likes of Word, Excel and Powerpoint files)? Or are you itching to get to grips with your camera or phone images but can’t afford the astronomical costs of the likes of Adobe’s Photoshop? Then open-source GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is just for you! This is a very sophisticated tool but has some important image editing facilities that provide users with stepping stones to professional results.

The group has two separate sessions planned for January onwards at Clarborough Village Hall (DN22 9LN – directly opposite the Kings Arms on Main Street):
- Wednesdays, 10.00am to 11.30am, starting 4th January for five weeks. £30.00 total.
- Saturdays, 2:00pm to 3.30pm, starting 7th January for five weeks. £40.00 total.
Wednesday sessions will explore the Windows 10 to Windows 11 issues and then explore uses of Libre Office in terms of word processing, spreadsheet uses for record keeping, calculations, etc and even, if time allows, a bit about creating displays and presentations. None of these sessions will depend on group members being savvy with any of these applications or procedures – they will start very much with ‘basics’.
Saturday afternoons will be a GIMP group – they will explore the use of this application to edit, improve and manage users’ own camera or phone images, including transferring them from your device(s) to laptops. If time allows, they will also explore the use of a scanner to create images for editing from other media including copying old photos ready for upgrading.
There is a suite of Windows 10 laptops for use or attendees are welcome to bring their own. If these are Apple laptops, GIMP is compatible with these – as it is with Linux distros too.
