It has been a busy month at Muddy Fork, with many projects completed. It has been amazing to witness all the hard work and teamwork happening this month – a real sense of belonging, community and achievement.
The group now has a cut flower patch complete and planted up. In a few months’ time they will have their very own bunches of flowers to hand out, as long as the rabbits don’t eat them! It has been a real team effort to get the area ready and planted.
Another project that has been completed is the honesty stand. The intention is for vegetables to be placed on the honesty stand just outside the gate, with the hope that the group can raise some funds towards next year’s seeds. Please keep an eye on their Facebook page for photos of what’s on offer. They will also be putting their surplus plants on the stand; plants currently looking for a home include peas, beans and tomatoes.
The team has already harvested its first crop of potatoes grown in the polytunnel from January. They didn’t make the honesty box as members had to test them, but they can confirm they are delicious! Keep your eyes ‘peeled’ for the next lot. The rhubarb and a few radishes all have passed the Muddy Fork taste test. Not only does the produce taste amazing but it’s all organically grown and practically carbon neutral, making it an excellent choice for you and for the planet.
The tunnel is all planted up with several varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers; it’s affectionately known as the salad tunnel. The tomatoes are flowering and very close to producing the first fruit of the season.
The group is always happy to welcome visitors to the garden. Look for the robin in the corner of the car park at Idle Valley Nature Reserve.
