The BIG Weekend

7th Retford Cubs and Scouts had an amazing time at The BIG Weekend over the May Day Bank Holiday.

Fifteen Cubs and seven Scouts joined with approximately 3,000 from Nottinghamshire Scouts at Newark Showground. They all had an amazing time taking part in all sorts of activities, from water activities at Hoveringham, fencing, climbing, crate stacking, air rifle shooting, archery, axe throwing, zorbing, Warhammer models, radio control cars, all sorts of inflatable fun, mini golf, craft area etc.

In April was the St George’s Day Parade in Retford, with the parade being led by Mansfield and District Corps of Drums. St Swithun’s Church was the location of the service which was led by Reverend Reuben Crossley.

Weekly sessions have continued to take place for all sections with aliens, planting, hiking, woodland quiz and more.

The group is looking for more help with its Beaver Scout section. They meet on Monday evenings, working with children aged six to eight years.

They are also seeking team members for the Scout section, working with those aged 10 to 14 years, from September onwards. If anyone is interested in either capacity, email 7thretford@gmail.com.

One of the Scouts, Matthew Tate-Hill has written about his experience:

Adventure and fun: A weekend with the 7th Retford Scouts and Cubs at Newark Showground, part of Nottinghamshire County Scouts, The BIG Weekend 2024.

The BIG Weekend at Newark Showground was filled with adventure, learning and friendship. Over the course of three nights during the bank holiday weekend, the Scouts and Cubs immersed themselves in several activities that left them with happy memories.

Friday night marked the beginning of the camp and the group arrived and set up. This was followed by an opening ceremony that set the tone for the weekend. Leaders took the opportunity to emphasise the significance of Scouting, instilling in the young participants the values of teamwork, resilience, and leadership. ‘Scout Radio’ was on hand to provide ongoing entertainment.

On Saturday, some of the Cubs eagerly embarked on water sports at Hoveringham, while the remaining Cubs and Scouts geared up for the activity session. Following this, they practiced some African drumming, learning a brand-new skill. There was zorbing, climbing walls, archery, rifle shooting, axe throwing, fencing, crate stacking and bush craft.

On Sunday members of the group delved into the world of creativity and imagination, engrossing themselves in painting Warhammer figures and other craft projects.

In the evenings, the group took a moment to unwind by either attending a concert and talent show in the Showground or enjoying a film together.

The camp was organised with lots of activities. From bouncy castles to cave mazes, everything integrated into the schedule, ensuring that there was never a dull moment. The addition of sumo suits added a dash of hilarity to the proceedings, as Scouts and Cubs engaged in friendly battles of strength and strategy.

Another highlight of the weekend was the young person’s driving school, where budding drivers honed their skills behind the wheel under the guidance of experienced instructors.

As the sun set on the final night of the camp; 7th Retford Scouts and Cubs reflected on their experiences. The variety of activities and experiences made for an enjoyable weekend.
