Following a successful AGM last month, The Arts Society Dukeries has issued an exciting 2024 programme of lectures, special interest days and outings.
The Society meets on the first Wednesday of most months to hear a lecture on a specific topic relating to the arts. Members also enjoy two Special Interest Days, newsletters and a national magazine, as well as a coach holiday and days out to the theatre and local places of interest.
In addition, the Society tries to involve local communities on art issues and has produced Trails of local areas, villages, churches and other special buildings and been part of special arts and heritage projects.
Their next lecture is at 11.00am on Wednesday 3rd April, when Lois Oliver presents ‘Morisot: Une Finesse Fragonardienne’.
Impressionist Bertha Morisot is known for her light-filled canvases on modern life: afternoons boating on a lake, young women in ballgowns, children playing, yet contemporaries perceived a connection with the 18th century. Renoir considers her “the last elegant and feminine artist that we have had since Fragonard”. The art critic Paul Gerard, surveying the 1896 retrospective of her work in Paris, declared: “It is the 18th century modernised.”
The following lecture, on 1st May, is on Stanford Raffles: Art Collector and Discoverer of Singapore.
Join the Society at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick S81 9AP. Tea / coffee is available from 10.00am, with Society notices at 10.50am. The lecture starts at 11.00am to 12.00pm approximately, depending on the questions. There is free car parking. Members pay an annual subscription and visitors are welcome, paying at the door.
