That was the year that was

“That was the week that was, it’s over let it go” – Who remembers Millicent Martin singing that song as the opening to ‘That was the Week that Was’ or TW3 as we used to call it. Do you realise that programme was only shown in 1962 and 63? Where have the last 59 years gone!
But then again, where have the last 12 months gone, what a year!
Still on the positive side, have any of you got bulbs showing in the garden yet, and have you done your digging, or are you one of those gardeners who don’t believe in digging but leave it all upto the worms to do the work for you? I must confess I now grow all my vegetables in 6’ x 3’ boxes, which are 18’ high. I have eight of these, and apart from adding my previous years rotted grass cuttings to the mix, I don’t really do much else.
It’s seed potato and seed packet time and planning next summer’s harvest is always fun. I have to admit I prefer growing onions from seed and mine were sown in late November. We ran out of tomatoes in early December, so next year I am going to try about six different varieties. I’m only telling you all this as Retford U3A’s Gardening Group are one of those successful groups who, via Zoom, have started to meet up again. We support the Muddy Fork group as well and Dom Schad and Pippa Ramsey are giving a talk to our general meeting on Zoom in February.
We also have an interesting speaker in January, when Wing Commander Adrian Sumner RAF rtd. will be presenting a talk entitled ‘A Hot Seat in a Cold War’. Adrian has over 8,000 hours flying in the left hand seat of the Vulcan Bomber, so his talk will be interesting as well as entertaining.
Retford U3A have succeeded in retaining most of their pre-covid membership, and this is due largely to those committee members who have, with great enthusiasm and energy, promoted the various groups and supported them with IT advice. We now have at least seven groups using Zoom, and one using Skype. Other groups use emails or the dear old telephone to keep in touch. Nationally, the U3A have lost about 20% of their membership, so in Retford we feel we are doing our best to support you all.
It’s a strange idea to join a new group like the U3A, especially at a time when we do not have face-to-face contact, but we all know this situation will not last forever, and there are active groups now meeting via Zoom. We do still want to invite people to have a look at what we have to offer, and you can do this via our website. There are lists of interest groups with contact details of the groups’ leaders, but if you want to, you can always contact our membership secretary for more information. Her name is Sue Paul. She is quite happy for you to phone her up, and she will tell you all about Retford’s U3A. Her phone number is 01777 705008.
