‘Searching for Segelocum,’ a short video introduction to the work being carried out by the Retford Archaeological and Metal Detecting Group, can be found on YouTube.
The group is presently carrying out a dig in Littleborough, close to the former Roman Town of Segelocum. Do you live locally? Are you interested in getting involved? Why not join the group and learn a bit about archaeology and the history of your local area?
The team is a varied mix of archaeologists and metal detectorists, and works with the County Archaeology Department and the local museum. Membership is free at the moment.
Do you have any old photos of Littleborough? Please send copies of such, along with any old maps, or any memories of the hamlet as it was. Any information would be welcome. The group will be setting up a small museum in the church at Littleborough, and anything that can be displayed – images, letters, items – would be appreciated.
The dig so far has produced a varied collection of pottery, ranging from Roman to Victorian, many coins, and an assortment of medals and dog tags.
Meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30pm in the Church Hall of St Michael’s Church, off Bridgegate, in Retford. Everyone is welcome.
