Retford Lions member and former president Roy Baines recently “passed to higher service” after a short illness which he bore stoically. Always the person to volunteer for Lions activities, Roy had been a member of Retford Lions club since 1989 and was noted for parading in the ‘Yellow Duck’ costume on Charter Day whilst the duck races were held on the River Idle. He also absolutely revelled in wearing a Santa suit at school visits and riding in Santa’s sleigh during the Lions’ Christmas visits. Another of his achievements was to help instigate and run the very popular bingo sessions in the Buttermarket for about 10 years. He will be sadly missed by all.
The funeral was held at Babworth Crematorium on Friday 13th March. Roy is survived by Sue, his wife; daughter Sue and sons Robert and Steve.
