Down on Plot 51 in Ordsall, the Rufford Avenue Allotment Group has recently had the Volunteer it Yourself project (VIY) on site and they have assisted with erecting the polytunnel and building some raised beds, some benches, a table, a compost bin and some planters.
The project works with young people aged 16 to 24 who are not in education, training or work. It aims to help them develop new skills, working with skilled crafts people who mentor them whilst undertaking community projects.
This has truly moved the group forward as they can now extend our growing season, grow more diverse plants and have shelter whilst working.
The group is still looking for new members. Gardening is not necessarily a requirement – people can just go along and enjoy the outdoors and socialise with others. They are also hoping to have the local primary school go along in the autumn term.
The group is continuing to meet every Wednesday at 10.00am to 1.00pm. This is a great place for those who like the outdoors to meet like-minded adults, make new friends and become more active. You can also take fresh produce home!
