Royal British Legion Retford and District Branch

2018 is already proving to be a busy year for the local branch of The Royal British Legion. Fifty entries have been received for the commemoration wall hanging and this is now being assembled ready for the presentation to Bassetlaw Museum in October. As this year marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, which in effect brought WWI to an end (although the Peace Treaty was not signed until the following year), it is expected that there will be added interest in the events leading up to 11th November.

In view of this Ann Hickman is urging anyone who wants a special wreath to order them as soon as possible. She is also able to order poppy crosses covering several regiments and all denominations. Again, early requests are advised. Ann’s number is at the end of this article. The branch has received a supply of the lamppost poppies that some villages displayed last year. These are also available from Ann and are £3.00 each. 2018 pin badges are also now available along with a new badge for the 100-year commemoration. These will be available at the many local events at which the branch will be standing, or from a committee member. Full details about the Armistice/Remembrance Sunday events will be available nearer the date. If any villages or schools are planning special events this year and would like some input from The Legion volunteers are happy to help in any way that they can.

Over a thousand Royal British Legion branches, including Retford and District, will be taking part in a Great Pilgrimage, the highlight of which will be a march through Ypres and the laying of wreaths at The Menin Gate. Those taking part will also tour some of the major battlefield areas and memorials. Scott Harrison and Carl Jenkin will be representing the Retford branch, Scott as Standard Bearer and Carl will be carrying our wreath. This promises to be a memorable event and a fitting tribute to all those affected by World War I.

As always if you need any information about the local branch, including membership or the help available please contact Ann Hickman on 01777 818993.
