Rotary support for Muddy Fork

Muddy Fork, Retford’s Gardening for Wellbeing charity, is delighted to have been given a generous donation by the local Rotary Club.

The sum of £900 will go a long way towards improvements in the garden, paying for five tonnes of topsoil (without which it’s hard to grow anything!) and a new polytunnel skin to replace one long since damaged by inclement weather. It also includes a contribution towards running costs, which are the charity’s main expense but are not so glamorous for many donors. This support is hugely appreciated.

Rob Morrison, Chair of the Rotary Community Services Committee, commented that ‘the Club were delighted to make this donation, enabling Muddy Fork’s valuable work in the community to continue’. Rob was particularly pleased that the Percy Laws Memorial Fund, which is administered by the Club, also donated to the project.

Talking of inclement weather, Retford has had its fair share of that recently, with a significant impact on the garden (still very soggy at the time of writing). Paths disappeared under water, and were restored by an intrepid team in their wellies depositing barrow-loads of woodchip straight into the flooded areas. Muddy Fork’s wood-chip donor, who has done so much for the garden, saved the day by dropping more off when it ran out.

The floods also threatened the bees, with one of the hives having to be moved to safety on higher ground – which the bees did not appreciate. They seem to have settled down and will hopefully not hold permanent grudges!

The fruits of their labours this year will be on sale on the Muddy Fork stall at the Retford Christmas Market on Sunday 26th November from 10.00am to 6.00pm. Along with honey, there will also be chutney and other preserves, Christmas cards, and willow and other crafts.

Go along and see what’s on offer, have a chat, find out more, and maybe make a donation. And if you can’t get there, don’t forget Muddy Fork’s new website, www.muddyfork.uk, or you can contact Rose at rose.muddyfork@outlook.com.
