A concert in memory of Vince Hines took place at Hill House School, Doncaster, on Tuesday 1st July.
The late Vince Hines, who joined the Rotary Club of Retford in 1987 and served as a past President, was known as a true character – someone who made things happen. He was particularly passionate about supporting the Doncaster Youth Orchestra.
One of Vince’s most notable achievements was the establishment of an innovative project in South Africa, providing underprivileged children with fortified bread and later fortified porridge, known as the Bread Fund. Vince believed that a nutritious start to the day helped children engage with their education more effectively. The project continues today. A group of Rotary Club of Retford members and their families recently visited South Africa to see the work in action. It remains a thriving and well-respected initiative.
To fundraise in support of the Bread Fund, Vince partnered with the Doncaster Youth Orchestra to stage concerts, benefitting both the orchestra and the project. In tribute to Vince, the orchestra – facing funding cuts – offered to perform a memorial concert. As an added highlight, a visiting band from Doncaster’s twin city of Herten, Germany, also performed.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
Four students from the Elizabethan Academy were sponsored to attend a Rotary weekend programme at Dukes Barn Outdoor Activity Centre in Chatsworth Park. The course aimed to develop self-awareness, public speaking, team-building, and leadership skills. Each student took turns acting as team leader, learning to listen to the thoughts and feelings of their peers. Group discussions and feedback sessions with staff supported their growth.
The Club looks forward to the students presenting their experiences at a future meeting.
Daneshill Sailing
Two sailing days have been held at Daneshill, with another scheduled. Year 6 pupils enjoyed thrilling experiences both on and in the water. Special thanks go to the Daneshill volunteers who generously gave their time to make the events memorable for the children.
Fundraising
A lively night of ferret racing, organised by Flat Caps and Ferrets, was held at Sturton le Steeple Village Hall. Over 80 attendees enjoyed the evening and a pie and peas supper. The event raised £1,100 for Rotary charities.
Rotakids Peace Anthem
A new peace anthem, Listen to the Children and Share, has been launched by the Rotakids.
