Members of the Rotary Club of Retford have been busy out and about this month. They have provided car parking marshals at the Osberton Horse Trials, sold poppies in Morrisons, and enjoyed a walk around Idle Valley. The club also supported Rotary International’s long-running project End Polio Now – a campaign launched in 1985 that has since reduced polio cases worldwide by 99%. The main focus remains on vaccinating millions of children across the globe. To raise awareness, the club held an information stall on Retford market day, followed by the planting of 7,000 purple crocus bulbs in Kings Park. The colour purple is symbolic, representing the purple dye marked on a child’s finger once they have been vaccinated. Further details are available at www.rotaryclubofretford.co.uk.
The Retford Rotary Santa Fun Run and Walk is back again for 2025
Question – what is the collective noun for a group of Santas?
Answer – a ‘Sleigh’!
Following on from the very soggy Santa Run last year, Retford Rotary are hoping for a much better day for the event in 2025. That said, there was a real sense of community and achievement within the group of about 125 runners who completed the course around the park last year! They are hoping that this year’s event on Sunday 7th December will be their biggest and best yet. It is easy to book a place – just visit https://rotaryclubofretford.co.uk/ and click on future events, and you will find a link to book.
There is a real sense of fun that brings a lovely splash of colour and joy to the town. The race starts at 10.00am, but be sure not to miss the pre-race warm up to a festive tune. What many people do not realise is that as well as a fun event in its own right, the Santa Run can be used by local charitable and community organisations to do some FUNdraising. On the Rotary Club’s website you will also find sponsor forms that can be used so an organisation can seek sponsorship for its own runner(s). Those funds are wholly for the benefit of that chosen charity. The only requirement is that the runner(s) are registered participants in the race.
So, whether just for fun or in support of your favourite good cause, they would love to see a huge ‘sleigh’ of Santas arrive in Retford Market Square ready to have fun on Sunday 7th December.
