During April, members of the Rotary Club of Retford have been actively involved with the local community through a mix of fundraising, volunteering and service-based activities.
A highlight was the Charity Fashion Show held at Ye Olde Bell at the start of the month. A sold-out evening saw around 180 people enjoying entertainment, all supported by a dedicated group of organisers, members, and friends. Their collective efforts, along with successful match funding from Rotary District, resulted in a generous £3,000 donation to Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid.
On the final Sunday of the month, a Spring Clean Litter Pick took place. Rotary members, friends, family, and volunteers from Specsavers teamed up and fanned out from Churchgate Car Park to collect litter from the streets. The effort, which filled a dozen bags, not only improved the appearance of the town but also contributed to protecting local wildlife.
Public appreciation on the day confirmed the positive impact of this initiative.
On Bank Holiday Monday, in collaboration with the Hospice, the Club held an event at Retford Town Hall to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The evening featured performances from the Bluebird Belles and a pie and peas supper, drawing strong community interest and a full house.
Looking ahead, the Club is continuing its work with several activities. By the time of reading, a plant sale, a children’s art competition and exhibition, and various youth-focused initiatives will have taken place.
Plans are already underway for the return of the popular Santa Run this December – hopefully under drier skies than last year.
A key date to note is Wednesday 23rd July, when the Rotary Club will host a Charity Golf Day at Retford Golf Club. This fun and sociable event aims to raise funds for Bassetlaw Food Bank and the NSPCC, in addition to other local Rotary-supported charities. Businesses interested in sponsoring the event are also invited to get in touch to discuss opportunities.
