In August, members of the Rotary Club of Retford organised a unique event – a ‘Treasure Hunt’ around the town. Participants raced to solve clues about the town, moving from location to location. The hunt was divided into four stages, each ending at a checkpoint where participants could enjoy much-needed refreshments.
The event generated a buzz around the town and helped local pubs at the checkpoints. A wide range of participants joined in, with the winners being a team from Jones and Co, while the runners-up were a team from the Food Bank. It was wonderful to see such strong support from local organisations.
On 10th September, World Suicide Prevention Day, the theme was ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide – Start the Conversation’, aiming to shift the perception of suicide from stigma and silence to understanding and support. The Rotary Club of Retford contributed £500 through the Percy Laws Memorial Fund to the Bassetlaw Focus on Farmers project. This donation helped fund 1,000 tractor-shaped in-cab air fresheners, each featuring a QR code providing farmers and rural community members with direct access to essential mental health support resources. The first air fresheners were distributed at a farmers’ open evening held at Idle Valley.
A fun event is planned for the evening of Thursday 17th October, and the Club invites local community teams to join in for a Quizzes and Karaoke evening at Ye Olde Bell, Barnby Moor, at 7.00pm. The event will raise funds for the Youth Committee. Teams can have up to eight people (over 18s only). Tickets are £5.00 (£7.00 with Gift Aid), available from 07815 009515.
Tickets are now available for the annual Christmas Lunch and Victorian Market, taking place on Thursday 21st November at Ye Olde Bell, Barnby Moor, from 10.00am to 2.00pm. In support of Bassetlaw Hospice, admission to the market only is by a £5.00 donation at the door. The Club is also calling for registrations for the Retford Family Santa Fun Run / Walk on the morning of Sunday 8th December.
