The summer holidays were no deterrent to the Rotary Club of Retford, and there were still some summer events that were held and successfully raised funds for charity.
The largest of these was the Golf Day at Retford Golf Club on Wednesday 24th July in support of the Bassetlaw Learning Disability Association, the NSPCC and Rotary Charities. On the day, the event was well supported by 72 generous golfers and over 40 businesses and other golf clubs. The excellent course conditions and the mostly fine and sunny day helped, and over £4,000 was raised. The thank you list is too long to publish – but nonetheless, big thanks go out to everyone involved in any way for their generosity and support on the day. This was the third time this event has been run and it looks as though it will become an annual occurrence.
The youth committee held a Murder Mystery Night at East Markham Village Hall to support their activities for young people. A sell out event with all 85 tickets sold, the attendees enjoyed a pie and pea supper and a bit of amateur sleuthing, courtesy of Mr Murderies Players, who also put on the play to support their local charity. A fun night, all for good causes – a genuine win win.
Members have also enjoyed some bowling competitions and two speaker evenings. The Club was joined by fellow Rotarians from the Worksop Club to hear from the fundraising manager for the Bassetlaw Hospital Emergency Village Appeal.
The Club is now gearing up for a busy autumn with a wide range of events. Also taking place for the third time will be the Retford Family Santa Run / Walk on the morning of Sunday 8th December. If you are reading this and have never taken part in such an event, then this is the year to give it a go! Also, there are opportunities via this event for participants to raise their own money for their chosen charities. Please contact the Club to find out more.
Finally, there will be another (the third!) Victorian Christmas Fair on Thursday 21st November. It is a lovely event, and you can also book a festive lunch. Why not make it a meet up with friends and enjoy the shopping and the eating!
