Rotary Club of Retford

The month of February has been a very sociable one for Rotary Club of Retford members.

On 9th February the annual Charter evening was held at Ye Olde Bell. With well over 100 members, partners and visitors in attendance, it was an opportunity to enjoy a very good meal, some relaxed entertainment and great company. A good time was had by all.

Also during February, the club enjoyed hearing from two speakers: Joanne Pritchard from Physio Pilates gave a talk on keeping strong, supple and safe, and Fran Walker, who is a Club member, gave a presentation on the past, present and future of the very interesting building that is the Priory Gatehouse in Worksop.

The month concluded with a several members taking part in an opportunity to visit and tour the Morgan car factory in Malvern. Although quite a distance, everyone who went thoroughly enjoyed the day and seeing the process of hand building a car from start to finish.

However, it has not all been social activities. Representatives of the Santa Run Committee were out and about, appropriately dressed in their Santa hats, to present some donations from the December event. Cheques were handed over to the Bassetlaw Food Bank and to the Bassetlaw Hospice.

Work is also underway for future events including the 8th Rotary Young Artist Competition. An exhibition of the children’s work entitled ‘Nature and Animals’ will be on show at St Swithun’s Church, Retford on Saturday 27th April from 10.00am to 4.00pm.

The exhibition and competition, containing work from the children from local schools, is also open to public entries for children aged 7-11. Entry to view the exhibition is free and visitors may submit an entry to the ‘public vote’ award. For entries, please send an email to chris.louise.daniels@gmail.com.

On Saturday 18th May the International Committee is hosting a plant sale on Retford Market. Members have been growing and sharing their plants in readiness. There should be a good selection on the day but get there early to ensure the best choice!

This year the Charity Golf Day will primarily be supporting the Bassetlaw Learning Disability Association and the NSPCC, along with other local Rotary Charities. Held at Retford Golf Club on Wednesday 24th July, applications are now open for teams of four. Interested? Contact mikedavis13@gmail.com or download an application form from the Club website.

And finally, following the flooding events at the end of 2023, the Rotary Club, through the Percy Laws Memorial Committee, has identified a limited fund to assist Retford households that may still be affected.

In the first instance please contact the Club through the website www.rotaryclubofretford.co.uk. Applications will be passed on to the Committee who will give consideration on a case-by-case basis.
