There has been a bit of an aquatic theme developing recently for the Rotary Club of Retford.

At the end of January, Retford Rotary President Mary Danby and Percy Laws Management Committee Chairperson Viv Montgomery, were delighted to visit the Retford and District Lifesavers at the Retford Leisure Centre. A cheque for £1,000 was presented to the Lifesavers Club.

The Lifesaving Club is dedicated to delivering essential lifesaving, first aid, rescue and personal survival skills. Alongside this they compete at a local, national and international level in various lifesaving competitions and are a recognised member of the Royal Life Saving Society UK. Retford Lifesaving Club offers an extensive range of awards and qualifications for people of all ages and abilities.

The money was donated to support the Lifesaving Club members who have qualified to compete in the World Lifesaving Interclub Youth Open Championships. Fifteen will be participating in the 14-18 years category, and three in The World Lifesaving Masters Championships. These are taking place in Australia in August. Retford Rotary Club wish them well in these endeavours.

The Retford Swimathon is one of the most significant fundraising (and fun) events on the Rotary calendar, on Saturday 9th March at the Retford Leisure Centre. Aside from a break for Covid, the event has taken place annually from its inauguration in 1988. Started to raise funds to support Rotary International’s aspiration to eradicate Polio from the world, it has continued to grow and supports many Rotary and local charities.

Teams of swimmers are drawn from schools, local businesses and charities, and they swim for sponsorship, which is shared between Rotary nominated charities and the teams’ own nominated charity. This way, the range of beneficiaries is wide and diverse and ensures that many local good causes receive funding from the event. Good luck to all participants on the day.

Finally, there is a save the date for your calendars. Supporting the Bassetlaw Hospice, a Fashion Show will be held at Ye Olde Bell Hotel, Barnby Moor, on 17th April from 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the Bassetlaw Hospice Appeal Office (01777 710444) or from Susan Porter (07980 882087). It should be an enjoyable evening so book early to avoid disappointment!
