April is approaching, bringing warm spring weather and Easter festivities. Retford u3a is set to make the most of the season by promoting physical and mental wellbeing through its four walking groups. Each group offers a different experience to suit various abilities. The Short Easy Walkers follow a flat route around Retford, taking about an hour to complete. The Moderates embark on a more adventurous five-mile hike. The Striders, for those who enjoy inclines and challenging terrain, cover an eight-mile route. Lastly, the Strollers maintain a steady pace, taking a couple of hours to complete a three-mile course.
For those who prefer cycling, the Cycling group provides a range of activities. The programme is structured into off-road and road rides, with two of each type scheduled every month. Road rides typically cover 25 to 35 miles at an average speed of 12mph, while off-road rides span 20 to 30 miles at approximately 10mph.
For a gentler form of exercise, croquet offers an enjoyable option. The new season starts in April. Croquet can be played by two, four, or six players, with the goal of hitting the ball(s) through six hoops in sequence, both ways, before finishing at the centre peg.
The meeting at The Well on Thursday 24th April will be divided into two sections. The first part will feature the Annual General Meeting, including reports from the Chair, Treasurer, and other committee members, as well as the election of committee members for the upcoming year.
The second part of the event will present Retford u3a’s version of Desert Island Discs. For those unfamiliar with this well-known BBC Radio 4 programme, it involves selecting five pieces of music that hold special significance or memories, alongside a book and a luxury item to take to the island. Pat Lockett will host the session, interviewing Pippa Ramsay, who will share the memories and insights behind her selections.
Members are looking forward to the 15th-anniversary celebration on Wednesday 18th June at 2.00pm at the West Retford Hotel. The event will feature music by the Simply Swing Band, refreshments including Pimms, strawberries, and cream, a raffle, and a ‘best hat or buttonhole’ competition. Tickets are available for £18.00.
