March is here, a time for u3a members to engage in spring cleaning with a twist. It is an opportunity to revisit groups with renewed enthusiasm, explore new ones that inspire, or even start a group to share a passion or expertise. The only limit is imagination and attracting like-minded others to join.
This month’s group spotlight focuses on the fun and challenging game of Canasta. New members are welcome, but they must join u3a to take part. Those unfamiliar with the game need not worry, as more experienced members are happy to teach newcomers. Canasta is an easy-to-learn rummy card game that always offers something new to discover. It does not require intense focus, so players can chat while playing. Meetings take place on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 9.30am at Hallcroft Community Centre.
Bridge is also available, and new members are welcome. It is a sociable group that does not take the game too seriously, with the focus on enjoyment. Joining the Bridge group is an excellent way to make new friends while engaging in a fun and relaxing card game. Meetings take place on the second and fourth Mondays at 2.00pm at Hallcroft Community Centre.
The General Meeting on Thursday 27th March at The Well will feature Roger Browne, a professional raconteur, writer, director, and pianist. He has performed in jazz clubs and festivals across the UK, Europe, North America, and Canada, and has accompanied many renowned artists.
His talk, Not Father O’Malley, humorously covers his Roman Catholic childhood in post-war Salford, his journey as a jazz pianist, and supporting the “wrong” football team. Roger’s passion for music began in his early years, listening to bands at Buille Hill Park and iconic radio shows such as Family Favourites, Housewife’s Choice, and Music While You Work. He will share this passion by playing some of his favourite songs live on the piano, promising an hour of fun, music, and nostalgia.
On Friday 11th April, the next Big Night Out will take place—a dinner and quiz at Retford Golf Club. Members may bring a guest. Those interested should email social@retford-u3a.org.uk.
Preparations for the 15th anniversary event on Wednesday 18th June at West Retford Hotel are underway. Attendees can enjoy a variety of entertainment, Pimms, and strawberries. Cost to be confirmed. Open to members – those wishing to participate should join u3a now.
