2025 may have landed with a typical British winter, but members of Retford u3a will not let that dampen their spirits as the group heads into its 15th anniversary year. The planning process for what promises to be a celebration to remember is already underway, so members are encouraged to watch this space for details in the coming months.

Now is the time to turn those New Year resolutions into actions, and what better way to start than with a new hobby or revisiting an old favourite? Retford u3a offers a multitude of interest groups for its members. Over the next few months, the spotlight will shine on these groups, giving everyone a taste of what each has to offer.

First up is the Recorder Group, which meets twice a month and frequently performs at various events. In the past year, the group has played at Christmas tree festivals, Charter Day, and Make Music Day in Retford, as well as with the Dukeries Community Band, Ryton Chorale, and at Retford Town Hall. Annually, the group meets with other u3a groups for a day of music-making, and in 2024, 50 players from Retford, Newark, Southwell, and West Wolds played together in Newark. In 2025, the Southwell group will graciously host this delightful event.

This informal group consists of 20+ players, with Carol Woodward as the musical director. The group is enthusiastic about honing its skills and is excited to welcome newcomers. The group practices a mix of new and old pieces during meetings in an atmosphere that is light-hearted and filled with enjoyment.

New members are welcome, regardless of their musical background. Sessions are available for beginners and those looking to improve. It also provides an excellent opportunity for those interested in exploring varied sizes of recorders. For more details, contact Tessa Hart via retford.u3asite.uk.

On Thursday 27th February, the General Meeting at The Well, Retford will feature Rod Auton, who will discuss the Chesterfield Canal – its past, present, and future. To brush up on canal knowledge, members can consider watching Canal Boat Diaries on BBC iPlayer. This series highlights the realities of living and travelling on the canal system, with Series 4, Episode 2 focusing on the Chesterfield Canal.
