Before we step into a new year, lets reflect on the amazing show of talent, ingenuity and skill displayed by Retford u3a. Over 140 members and guests attended the Showcase Meeting, and what an entertaining afternoon it was! Poetry, often seen as slightly sober, was anything but, as members brought stories to life – from Little Red Riding Hood to more risqué subjects. The Creative Writing Group didn’t fail to entertain either; the only words to describe it was “simply enchanting” and it held everyone’s attention.

In addition, Retford u3a members showcased a remarkable array of quilting and flower arranging expertise, each piece unique and inspiring. The Making Music Group provided a join in session, which everyone enjoyed and our Recorder Group were outstanding. Whilst on the overhead screens, examples of photography and water colours rotated, providing inspiration to us all. Photographs of the event courtesy of Andy Paul can be viewed on Retford u3a’s website or their Facebook page.

As we look forward to 2025, why not add a touch of brightness to these winter days by joining Retford u3a? With over 30 diverse interest groups, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re passionate about music, gardening, history, art, crafts or walking even on a cold winter’s day, you’ll find a community of like-minded individuals ready to share and explore.

If you have a unique interest not currently represented, why not start your own group? Their Group Coordinator is there to help you every step of the way; contact co-groups@retford-u3a.org.uk for more information or visit www.retford.u3asite.uk.

Currently, they have five Book Groups, who select a book each month to read and then meet at various members’ homes, to discuss its finer points. This evokes some interesting choices and authors you may not have come across before. Group 5 would like to recommend ‘Lessons in Chemistry’ by Bonnie Garmus, quite an easy yet entertaining read. It’s also available as a mini-series on Apple TV and though it may not accurately depict the book, it’s certainly interesting.

The Dressmaking and Craft Group have a whole array of activities. If it involves fabric, sewing machines, embroidery, knitting / crochet needles, felting, or pattern drafting they can do it. Added to this interesting conversation covering everyday life to world events, even a bit of gossip with tea and a slice of delicious cake.

Don’t miss Retford u3a’s General Meeting at The Well, held on the fourth Thursday of each month. The next meeting is on 23rd January at 1.30pm, featuring guest speaker Roy Evans talking about ‘Life in an Edwardian Village’. Make sure to jot down this date in your diary! They’re already preparing an exciting lineup of speakers for 2025, and you won’t want to miss out on what we have planned. Stay tuned for more details.

Also, note that on 17th January Retford Golf Club, Ordsall will play host to ‘The Big Night Out’. This event is already sold out, but join and secure a place on the next one.

As they reflect on these achievements, the Retford u3a Committee are reminded of the enriching experiences and strong bonds formed throughout the year. Look out for more updates and join them as they embark on their 15th year filled with learning and camaraderie at Retford u3a. It’s a perfect time to join. Live a bit, Laugh a lot, Learn something new. Happy New Year.
