The Retford Community Singers choir for everyone is singing its way into summer, loving the freedom of singing just for the sheer enjoyment of it, rather than rehearsing strictly for a performance (though they do have the option of singing out in the community from time to time, too).
Members work hard each week to achieve the satisfaction of beautiful harmony singing, led by their talented director, Janet Wood. The choir mostly sings unaccompanied from a range of singing traditions, without any auditions or the need to read musical scores.
Retford Community Singers is holding an open Singing Day at Retford Town Hall Council Chamber on Saturday 19th May from 10.00am to 3.30pm, suitable for everyone, whatever your experience, even if you’ve never tried this kind of thing before.
The day will be led by Alison Bullivent, community choir leader, currently of Wakefield’s Cloud 9 Choir, and also one of the regular leaders of Hull Freedom Chorus — she led several choir projects during Hull City of Culture Year, too. Last year she was commissioned to create a bespoke choir for the National Coal Mining Museum England as part of a Choir Festival celebration at the museum. Ali has been a director of Noteworthy Women in Baildon for two years and led Wakefield Cathedral Praise Singers for six years. She loves gospel and African music and also recently undertook a project with the Yorkshire Wildlife Park composing songs such as ‘Giraffe’ and ‘Ubehejane’ (‘Rhino’ in Zulu) Find her at www.alibullivent.co.uk or Facebook Page ‘Ali Bullivent Sings’.
The cost for the Singing Day is £10.00 (£8.00 for those on means tested benefits). Places are limited; please register by calling Bruce on 01777 704154. Alternatively, new singers are always welcome to try out a regular session any Tuesday in term time, from 7.30pm to 9.15pm. Just turn up at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Babworth Road, Retford DN22 7BP. The cost is £4.00 (or £2.00) per week. It’s uplifting, friendly and fun. Find out more at www.retfordcommunitysingers.co.uk.
