Retford and District Scottish Country Dance Society ended its current season of dancing at the Chapelgate Hall, Grove Street Methodist Church, Retford on 19th December 2017. Having had many successful and happy years the society has decided to move. Many thanks to Grove Street Methodist Church for their facilities and hospitality.
From 9th January, society members will be dancing at Retford Oaks Academy, Retford Road, Babworth. This venue provides them with unlimited car parking spaces. Classes are held every Tuesday during school term time, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm
So, if you are looking for something to do which involves gentle exercise of the body and mind, a chat and a laugh, then look no further.
It is a mixed ability group of all ages, and beginners and experienced dancers are very welcome to join. You don’t need to bring a partner as everybody mixes around; just a pair of comfortable shoes and most important of all, a sense of humour. Gents, you don’t even need a kilt. The first night is free, and thereafter the charge works out at £3.00 per week.
There are three types of dance — jigs and reels, which are quite lively, and the more sedate strathspey, all of which are danced each Tuesday.
In addition, the Retford Branch is also a member of The Association of Scottish Country Dance Societies (ASCDS), which promotes dancing in the North-East Midlands. The ASCDS has an annual festival where branches of the association meet, and in May 2018, this will also be held at the Retford Oaks Academy, Retford Road, Babworth. This consists of an afternoon dance by the various branches, followed by an evening dance which is open to one and all. Keep an eye out for more information over the next few months
