When Retford Men’s Probus Club met on Friday 16th February at Hallcroft Community Centre the attendance figures were somewhat depleted, mainly due to seasonal illnesses.

In the absence of President George Teasdale, Group Secretary Roy Evans conducted the proceedings on the day. After outlining the official business and welcoming a prospective new member, he was pleased to welcome the speaker for the event.

Tim Shuldham is Chairman and long-standing Trustee of Sloswickes Almshouse Charity, one of Retford’s oldest institutions. It is governed by a board of volunteer trustees and provides accommodation for people aged over 60 with strong connections with Retford, with a financial or social need that can be addressed by becoming a resident of the affordable, well maintained town centre dwellings.

The charity invests a lot of money in keeping its properties modernised, safe and comfortable for its residents, housed in the 46 properties to be found in various central locations in the town. A well-presented talk highlighting the need for such housing and the problems encountered in the day to day running of the scheme.

The group met again on Friday 1st March when member Frank Ward told the gathering of a layperson in the world of Juris Prudence.

Visitors and new members always welcome. For more information see www.retfordmensprobusclub.org.uk.
