This year’s weather has provided a bumper harvest of fruits, which by now will have been picked, cooked, bottled, or turned into jam or even wine to enjoy over the winter months. It certainly cannot be said that the summer was poor – if anything, it was a little too dry at times. Retford Mayflower WI’s August picnic in Stephen House garden proved a great success on a lovely warm evening, offering members a welcome chance to relax, chat with friends, and meet newer members in a more informal setting.

In September, members gathered to assemble Christmas tree decorations that Marie had kindly prepared in advance for the Christmas Tree Festival at St Swithun’s Church later this month. Once the sticking and tying were complete, the evening rounded off with a light-hearted quiz and chocolate prizes. On 17th September, five members joined the Nottinghamshire Federation trip to the M&S Archive, located on the University of Leeds Western Campus. The exhibition told the 140-year story of Marks & Spencer, showcasing products sold over the decades, logo changes, and even a rail of vintage clothing for visitors to try on. After the tour, the group enjoyed some retail therapy at a nearby shopping outlet before heading home.

The October meeting featured the AGM, during which members heard reports and elected officers for the coming year. Afterwards, there was time for some light-hearted fun along with the customary tea, coffee, cake, and biscuits. Mayflower WI also organises at least one litter pick around the town each year, the most recent of which took place on Sunday 12th October, followed by a well-earned breakfast at Wetherspoons.

At the upcoming Remembrance Service on Sunday 9th November, members will lay a wreath at the memorial alongside many other local organisations, schools, and community groups. On Wednesday 12th November, the group will welcome guest speaker Andrew Jarvis to Stephen House, Chapelgate, at 7.30pm, to talk about the Children’s Air Ambulance and HEMS. Visitors are very welcome, and the first visit is free.

Looking ahead, the December meeting will be the group’s Christmas Party, complete with a magician for entertainment, while January 2026 will bring a lively start to the new year with a visit from a ukulele band.
