November 2024 was a busy month for Retford Mayflower WI. On Sunday 10th November, several members attended the Remembrance Service held in Retford Market Square. The group contributed a sustainable wreath to the memorial, featuring both traditional red poppies and purple ones to honour animals that lost their lives in wars. These poppies were beautifully knitted or crocheted by members.

On Wednesday 13th November, members and visitors enjoyed a lively Food Tasting evening hosted by the dedicated secretary, Shirley, and her husband, Roger, who provided excellent assistance. Attendees sampled items such as crisps, biscuits, and chocolate while guessing the retailer. The event was filled with chatter and laughter, and the evening passed so quickly that Shirley’s full list of items could not be covered!

The Christmas Market and Tree Lighting Ceremony took place on Sunday 24th November, though it was disrupted by Storm Bert. While the outdoor market (except for food vendors and rides) was cancelled, the craft fair proceeded in the Town Hall and Buttermarket.

Retford Mayflower WI hosted a stall offering bacon rolls, homemade soup, and a tempting selection of home-baked cakes. Despite a slow start in the morning, improving weather brought many visitors, making the event a success.

December saw the annual Christmas party, providing members with a chance to relax, enjoy good food, and sing along to karaoke. The evening included the tradition of dipping into Secret Santa’s sack, making it a joyful occasion to end the year.

Looking ahead, 2025 promises another year of engaging talks and events. The first meeting will take place on Wednesday 8th January, featuring a talk titled Tales from the Tower by Keith Hanson, which is expected to be highly intriguing.

Visitors are always welcome to join the monthly meetings, held on the second Wednesday of each month at Stephen House, Chapelgate, starting at 7.30pm. For those interested in becoming members, this is an excellent opportunity to get involved.
