Looking back at the end of 2023, 19 members of Retford Mayflower WI were totally absorbed at the 8th November meeting when Janice Holmes from Janice Rose Lingerie gave a very interesting presentation on ladies underwear.
Janice spent 35 years working for M&S prior to opening her own business in 2019 at Sutton-on-Trent. Janice and her staff provide clients with a relaxed, personal service which besides measuring includes time to talk and explain the facts of why a certain bra might be recommended.
She has had to train 23 times for 23 separate manufacturers and in one bra alone does 84 sizes. Janice gives talks to schools, WIs, the RAF and other groups, and sponsors a girls’ football team. She has been out to the Gambia twice to do charity work by taking donated bras and giving talks to girls on breast awareness.
Already some members have made the trip to Sutton-on-Trent and hopefully more will do so in the future!
On 26th November Mayflower members were busy bees serving refreshments in the Buttermarket at the Retford Christmas Market. It was a bitterly cold day and hot drinks and bacon-and-egg rolls were in great demand, along with a fantastic choice of cakes and traybakes.
Their Christmas tree was already on display at St Swithun’s Festival and, tied in with the November talk, the tree was decorated with bras which had been given fabulous new identities by members in support of breast cancer.
The December meeting was party night with members participating in two chosen crafts – macrame, paper cutting or cards – plus enjoying food, drink, conversation and secret Santa.
The WI has enjoyed a very good year and looks forward to 2024 with a new programme, which starts on Wednesday 8th January with Keith Hanson and his talk ‘Tales of the Tower’. Prospective new members and visitors are always welcome at 7.30pm in Stephen House on Chapelgate.
