Time flies and Retford Mayflower WI have had a busy few months with meetings and additional organised events.
On Sunday 7th May a team of members were in action as Retford Mayflower manned the cafe in the Buttermarket and also the Town Hall ballroom for the Coronation event. There are always plenty of homemade goodies at these special occasions and they have some good bakers who turn up trumps every time they are called on.
The May meeting was all about British Sign Language and how it evolved into what is in practice today. All of the members had a go at signing their names along with other words. It will be interesting to see if people remember and try to sign to their friends at future meetings.
The group continue to support the Bassetlaw Food Bank by having a box at all meetings for members to put their donations in and then they are delivered to the shop.
June saw the WI submit a team for the County Quiz, the venue for Mayflower was Carlton-in-Lindrick and over 100 teams took part. All the results have to be collated before teams know how successful they were but it is always a fun evening.
On the weekend of 9th to 11th June a group of intrepid members went to Bothamsall for a camping weekend which was great fun. The sun shone all weekend and the River Meden was an ideal place to get to grips with kayaking whilst avoiding any low branches. All the exercise was well rewarded with a glass of chilled contents! Everyone enjoyed themselves and there may be some members who now wish that they had gone along either for the weekend or just a day of fun with like minded people.
The June meeting was held in Kings’ Park where members had a demonstration on Nordic walking before returning to Stephen House for refreshments and a catchup.
On Wednesday 12th July at 7.30pm, Keith Appleyard will talk about ‘Bletchley Park and Cracking the Enigma Code’. This meeting is open to anyone who is thinking of becoming a WI member. They meet at Stephen House on Chapelgate and visitors pay a small fee. Find out what else the group are planning for the future to see if they would like to join. Annual membership fee is £46.00 for 11 monthly meetings including refreshments.
