The expression ‘Hobson’s Choice’ is thought to go back to the 1500s. But much more recently it was the title given to a very famous and much loved play – perhaps even more famous as a film starring John Mills. In fact it was adapted for film more than once and even became a Broadway musical.

It’s the story of Henry Hobson, shoemaker, and his three daughters who are forced to work for their father unpaid. Of course, there is rebellion in the air which comes to a head when the oldest rather plain daughter Maggie decides she will marry Will Mossop, the lowly but highly skilled shoemaker working in the cellar for her father. Will reluctantly accepts.

To find out whether this oddly matched couple succeed in life – and to enjoy this classic comedy on stage – catch it at Retford Little Theatre from 27th January to 1st February. Public booking opens on 22nd January: boxoffice@rlt.org.uk or phone 01777 702002 between 6.00pm and 8.00pm (10.00am to 12.00pm on Saturdays).
