The Well Methodist Church in Retford was the venue for Retford Lions’ Last Night of the Proms concert in September. This second edition proved just as successful as the inaugural event last year. A sold-out audience enjoyed a wonderful evening of music, featuring a mix of popular classics and lively new pieces performed by the Hatfield and Askern Miners Welfare Band. A special highlight of the evening was the appearance of professional baritone Martin Lamb, whose powerful performance received an enthusiastic response from the audience. The Lions extend their thanks to Jones & Co for kindly sponsoring the event.
At the club’s September meeting, members heard from Katherine Miller of Framework Housing Association, who spoke about the organisation’s vital work across Nottinghamshire. Within Bassetlaw, Framework provides Connect support services, funded by Nottinghamshire County Council, to help people live independently, as well as supported housing funded by the NHS.
Retford Lions will also be supporting this year’s Poppy Appeal by selling poppies at Morrisons at the end of October – please stop by and say hello.
Santa needs help!
Preparations are already underway for Santa’s sleigh tours around the streets of Retford this December. However, the Lions urgently need a new place to store the sleigh during the day, as their previous premises are no longer available. If you know of a suitable location in or near Retford, please contact Bruce on 01777 704154. The space should be large enough to accommodate the sleigh – which is quite tall – along with the van used to tow it. Ideally, it should be secure, sheltered from the weather, and protected from vandalism. Lighting and access to electricity would be a welcome bonus.
