It may seem strange to be thinking about springtime when summer has barely passed, but Retford Lions are already planning their latest additions to the daffodil displays that bring so much colour in the spring. This year’s planting, taking place in October, will be in Askham, Ranskill and on London Road in Retford. Anyone who sees the Lions at work is encouraged to stop and say hello.

Following another successful golf tournament in July, the Lions will be presenting a cheque for over £5,000 to Bassetlaw Hospice at a social evening at Retford Bowls Club. The event will also be an opportunity to thank everyone involved for their hard work and support.

Retford Lions are always keen to support the young people of the town. When Retford FC Juniors approached them for help with the purchase of new kit, a grant of £600 was agreed. The kit has now arrived, and a photoshoot to showcase it has been arranged at the Elizabethan Playing Field in Ordsall. The Lions hope the youngsters wear the kit with pride and play with the same spirit.

The club recently joined Southwell Lions for their annual fruit gleaning event. A whole orchard of apples was donated to be picked and distributed to local food charities. Retford Lions were delighted to lend a hand and enjoyed a very successful day harvesting the fruit.

Each August, Lions groups from across the region host a Fun and Sports Day for the disabled in Doncaster. Every group organises a game or fun activity for participants to enjoy. This year, Retford Lions had a wonderful day and were rewarded by seeing many smiling faces leaving the park happy and fulfilled.
