Why do people volunteer their time to the community? For some, like those who have had a busy working life, volunteering provides a new focus. Every individual has their own reason for getting involved and their own expectations of what it will bring. There is no right or wrong approach – it is about exploring the opportunities available and finding the one that feels right.

Joining Lions is a great way to meet people and know that a real difference is being made. Sometimes life can knock confidence, whether through job loss or an extended period away from work. Others may simply be a little shy and want to develop personal skills. Volunteering offers a chance to regain confidence at a comfortable pace, allowing individuals to grow in their own time.

The most important aspect of volunteering is that it should be enjoyable on one’s own terms and a rewarding experience for both the volunteer and those they support.

Volunteering also connects people to their local community, fostering a sense of belonging and reducing isolation. It provides insight into how local services operate and, in some cases, an opportunity to make meaningful improvements. By contributing time to community groups and services, volunteers not only support others but also gain valuable experience that can lead to positive changes.

Last month, Lions continued CPR training in schools. Two sessions were delivered and well received at Clarborough Primary (27 children) and Thrumpton in Retford. Sessions are also booked at South Leverton, Dunham School, Blyth, and Elkesley.

Progress has also been made on the vision testing initiative for schools. Equipment is now in place, as is training, with testing schedules yet to be finalised.
