Retford Lions Club

With festive decorations packed away for another year, Retford Lions are turning their focus back to supporting the local community. In 2024, their CPR training sessions for schools and groups proved highly successful, and this initiative will continue in 2025.

An exciting new development is the introduction of a vision testing programme for primary school children.

Approximately 5% of preschool children have undetected vision problems, many of which go unnoticed due to the lack of obvious symptoms. Issues such as lazy eye (amblyopia) can result in permanent vision loss or blindness if left untreated. Early detection is crucial, as treatment is most effective during the preschool years.

The Lions’ vision screening programme identifies potential problems and provides information to families, encouraging them to seek professional care if needed. Lions Kid’s Vision screenings have been widely used in the USA with great success. Using hand-held camera systems operated by trained Lions, screenings are quick, non-invasive, and highly accurate. No drops or physical contact are required.

Of the 670 screenings conducted so far, 10.9% of children tested required further evaluation by an eye care professional.

In 2025, local Lions members will undergo training to bring this vital service to Retford and surrounding areas, complementing existing NHS and school vision screening programmes.

Shockingly, approximately 45% of children do not undergo eye examinations during their early years, often going years without seeing an optician. Retford Lions aim to help bridge this gap by providing more opportunities for early detection and intervention.
